Perpetual Futures Analysis & Modeling

About Perp Mechanics

Perp Mechanics is an educational analysis and modeling platform focused on cryptocurrency perpetual futures and related derivatives mechanics. It makes the assumptions, costs, cash flows and risks of hypothetical positions easier to understand and analyze.

Tools and explanations

The Crypto Perpetuals & Basis Workbench is our main application. It explores linear and inverse perpetual contracts, funding payments, basis relationships, isolated-margin risk, execution costs, hedging scenarios and two-market funding spreads. Related analytical tools explore sensitivity, break-even conditions and margin requirements within supported scenarios.

The standalone calculators answer narrower questions about funding payments, perpetual position P&L and generic isolated-margin liquidation thresholds. They use the same underlying financial logic where applicable.

Our Guides explain perpetual futures, funding, margin, liquidation, basis, arbitrage mechanics and contract structures through worked examples and source references.

Operator and publisher

Perp Mechanics is operated and published by Cloudwards e.K., owned by Oliver Sinz. Perp Mechanics is the website's brand, not a separate legal entity. Full operator and contact details are in the Imprint.

Editorial responsibility: Oliver Sinz

Oliver Sinz · Diplom-Betriebswirt (FH)

As the owner of Cloudwards e.K., Oliver Sinz has spent more than 20 years designing and developing financial-information and comparison websites, primarily for the German market. For Perp Mechanics, he is responsible for the product concept, editorial direction, publication decisions and continued development of the platform.

Research and editorial process

The current Guides were prepared through AI-assisted research and drafting, including Claude Opus. The workflow uses primary-source documentation, including official exchange specifications, and regulatory and institutional references where relevant. Articles include worked financial examples, explicit assumptions and source citations.

AI assistance does not itself establish independent verification. Editorial direction and publication responsibility remain with Oliver Sinz and the site operator, Cloudwards e.K.. The editorial-responsibility line identifies that role; it does not claim exclusive personal authorship.

Each Guide displays a Last verified date from its article metadata. This is the article's stated reference and factual verification date, not a publication date, an automatic update timestamp or evidence of continuous monitoring. Exchange rules and market conventions may change after that date.

Financial modeling methodology

The Workbench and calculators use a shared deterministic financial engine: the same hypothetical inputs produce the same modeled results. Explicit mathematical conventions, consistent settlement and P&L accounting, and documented assumptions define what those results mean.

Automated unit and regression tests include independently specified numerical reference cases. These checks support technical confidence within the documented model; they do not certify the engine or guarantee numerical accuracy in every situation, exchange-exact results or actual market outcomes.

Read the financial-model methodology for formulas, assumptions and supported scenarios.

Model boundaries and financial risk

This is hypothetical scenario modeling with user-defined inputs. There is no live exchange data, exchange API connection, trading execution, exchange account or wallet functionality. The tools do not forecast prices or funding rates, reproduce exchange-specific liquidation engines, or simulate cross margin or portfolio margin.

Arbitrage returns and perpetual basis convergence are not guaranteed, and hedged strategies are not risk-free. Leveraged cryptocurrency derivatives involve substantial risk and can cause rapid losses. The Workbench models selected aspects of those risks; it does not eliminate them. The methodology explains the model's limits in detail.
